Item Name: Engine Block Assembly, Diesel NSN: 2815-00-394-9729 Part Numbers: L3 Technologies (CAGE: 02978) P/N 655540 or 11684108 Estimated Quantity: Minimum - 3, Maximum - 94 End Item: Recovery Vehicle, M51/M74/M88 Description: This AVDS-1790 2-series engine is the heart of the M88 A1 Recovery and AVLB Vehicle Platforms and makes mobility and recovery operations possible. The engine block assemblies are an integral part of the AVDS-1790 12-cylinder v-type architecture and is the structure for the rotating and components contained within the engine block crankcase. The engine block also locates reciprocating components contained within the cylinder heads assemblies which are fastened to the left and right decks of the engine block. The engine block assemblies are an integral part of the AVDS-1790 2-series diesel engines. The engine block is a solid aluminum casting which has the requisite cylinder head assembly spacing and mounting holes to accommodate the 12-cylinder, v-type arrangement inherent in all AVDS-1790 engines. The one-piece engine block captures the rotating crankshaft assembly with seven complimentary spaced forged main caps and fasteners. This allows a uniform load distribution of the forces generated by the combustion occurring sequentially in all 12 cylinders. The block also contains oil passages which keep the rotating assembly cooled and lubricated.
