The current effort consists of a data center and colocation hosting services at two locations: Ashburn, VA (alternate contingency of operations (COOP) site) and Chicago, IL (primary operational site). Services include the use of data center services and management tools to provide a location for reliable and secure data connectivity between Government and various commercial networks. Two facilities are required as a risk management measure which requires the data transport equipment to be located at different facilities in the event of a system failure/catastrophic event at the primary location to support contingency operations. In the event of a failure in Chicago or on the Chicago/Rock Island links, the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) session will become inactive leaving only the routes recorded through Ashburn/Ft. Belvoir session. The traffic will dynamically transition to the backup path through route convergence. The configuration also allows for manual reconfiguration if there is a need to force Ashburn/Ft. Belvoir to become the primary Government’s Non-classified Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPRnet) path. The potential for manual reconfiguration necessitates the geographical need for the data center to be within a 200 mile radius of the Governments NIPRNET points of presence at the Rock Island Arsenal (RIA), IL and Fort (Ft.) Belvoir, VA.
