The PALMS (Particle Analysis by Laser Mass Spectrometry) Instrument measures the composition of single aerosol particles. The ability of the technique to discern the chemical “fingerprint” of individual particles is a distinguishing aspect of the PALMS instrument and is contributing to the objective of the Climate Forcing Program of NOAA’s Climate Mission Goal. A new laser ionization mass spectrometer, which makes in-situ measurements of the chemical composition of individual aerosol particles, is being built and requires an excimer laser for operation. SCOPE OR MISSION: We are constructing a new NOAA PALMS-NextGen instrument for aircraft sampling. PALMS is an autonomous aerosol particle composition instrument that flies aboard NOAA and NASA aircraft. We intend to fly PALMS-NextGen during the NASA ACCLIP campaign aboard the WB57 aircraft in 2020. This new PALMS-NextGen instrument replaces an existing airborne PALMS instrument that currently uses one obsolete excimer laser to ionize aerosol particles. Particle ionization lasers are critical components to the operation of PALMS-NextGen. BACKGROUND AND TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: The new laser ionization mass spectrometer being built requires an excimer laser for operation. Market research shows that there is only one laser that meets our requirements. The chosen LDi model CEX-100 is 9.4 kg and will 5 mJ per pulse with light output about 400 ns after an external trigger. The GAM model EX-5 is 15 kg, larger than the CEX-100, and light output is 2500 ns after an external trigger, so it does not meet that requirement. The ATL laser model ATLEX-300 is 60 kg, which is much heavier, and requires over 3200 ns after an external trigger, so it does not meet that requirement. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS: The laser must operate at 193 nm with at least 4 mJ per pulse, be of miniature (weighs less than 10kg) size for integration into the PALMS instrument, and provide light output less than 500 ns after an external trigger.
