The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA), Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary (WSCNMS) requires surface buoys and related hardware for sanctuary mooring systems. The WSCNMS provides stewardship for our nation's maritime heritage in Lake Michigan, including a collection of historic shipwreck sites. There are 36 known shipwrecks in the sanctuary and research indicates that several dozen more shipwrecks are yet to be discovered in sanctuary waters. To protect sanctuary resources from anchor damage and to facilitate safe public access, the sanctuary installs permanent moorings at shipwreck sites in depths ranging from 10 to 300 feet of water.
