NOAA plans to award a sole source purchase order to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) to develop an AI-based predictive model of ocean temperature, salinity, and currents using the SCHISM physics-based model and MLEOF AI tools. VIMS is uniquely qualified as the owner and developer of both the SCHISM model and the specific AI methodologies required, and no other sources can provide the necessary integration. This project will enable the National Ocean Service to make major advancements in coastal ocean modeling and prediction. The period of performance is from October 1, 2026, to September 30, 2027.
