NIST’s Center for Neutron Research operates the 20 MW National Bureau of Standards Reactor (NBSR) in Gaithersburg, Maryland, which uses 30 highly enriched uranium fuel elements and produces about 28 spent fuel elements per year. NRC requirements mandate transferring this spent fuel to the DOE Savannah River Site near Aiken, South Carolina. The contract requires one base shipment completed no later than December 31, 2028, with an option for a second shipment completed no later than December 31, 2030.
