The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce. NIST is a physical science laboratory facility with the main campus located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, a secondary campus in Boulder, Colorado, and a few smaller satellite locations. NIST’s mission is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life. The NIST-Gaithersburg Site occupies almost 600 acres and includes approximately 65 Buildings (approximately 3,708,344 ft2). NIST-Boulder site occupies 206 acres with over 30 buildings and structures (approximately 906,285 ft2). The fall protection survey will include all high, and low bay structures, cooling towers, building roofs, stairways, dangerous equipment, hoist areas, scaffolds, holes, pits, fixed ladders, runways, dock boards, and any other areas with unprotected sides/edges, floors, roof, loading docks, vertical faces, and open sided floors where a fall hazard of greater than four feet exists; that is areas where Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) fall protection regulations would apply.
