Description: The USDA-FAS Office of Capacity Building and Development Trade and Scientific Exchanges Division - Cochran Fellowship Program has the need for US based training for international participants from the following countries Mexico, China, Mongolia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Moldova, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh regarding US livestock reproductive technologies and techniques for the genetic improvement of dairy cattle as well as qualities of US dairy genetics, dairy farm management, animal health, and dairy milk. The consecutive two-week training program shall be held September 28 - October 12, 2019 and shall include seven individual Cochran Fellowship training programs to educate the 49 Fellows. The training programs should provide the Fellows with an in-depth knowledge of US dairy productions, the qualities of various US dairy products, particularly cheddar cheeses and whey powder, and marketing strategies for US dairy in the global marketplace. The training programs should include visits to livestock genetics companies, dairy farms, dairy cattle associations (such as the American Holstein Association), dairy producers, laboratories, markets, and research institutions. An important component of these training programs will be attendance at the World Dairy Expo that will be held October 1-5, 2019 in Madison Wisconsin. The overall program objective is to assist eligible countries to further develop their dairy farm and dairy reproductive genetics industries, strengthen their knowledge of US dairy products and US dairy marketing strategies, and to eventually increase productivity of local dairy producer associations. The goal of these training programs is to increase the Fellows' capacity for agriculture research, extension, and participation in international trade; and to further develop the market for US reproductive livestock genetics, dairy products, and ingredients in Mexico, China, Mongolia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Moldova, Bosnia, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. The trainer will ensure that the Fellows develop competencies in the following areas: A. Understanding US beef cattle production and management a. Pasture management b. Cattle nutrition and health c. Reproduction i. Genetics ii. Fertility (including site visits to reproductive centers that test semen) iii. Breed selection testing/cross-breeding and which traits to look for B.
