The purpose of the FY20 Artesian Springs Plantation Integrated Fuels Project is to restore the health and vigor of Artesian plantation and reduce the hazardous fuels that contribute to crown fire initiation and sustain crown fire spread. The project is designed to reduce tree density, remove competing vegetation, reduce hazardous fuels, and reduce crown length to promote forest health and reduce tree mortality from bark beetles and wildfire. Live trees shall be thinned from below; live and dead brush shall be cut from around residual trees, residual trees shall be pruned (crown lift). Brush canopy will be reduced either by hand or mechanical means leaving a 4-6 inch stump after treatment. Slash will be reduced by mastication and chipping and piling of slash. Standing dead or dying trees will be cut limbed and bucked up. Downed dead trees will be limbed and bucked up.
