A Base of approximately 26,400 feet (5 miles) of new 4-wire, wood post fence is needed to be installed at the USDA-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) Central Plains Experimental Range, near 18908 Weld County Road 114 Nunn, CO. There are four (4) segments of new fence to be installed (please see attached files for fence map locations and specifics for each fence segment): 1) Fence 1: (sections 25 and 26, south fence) for 2 miles (10,560 feet) 2) Fence 2: (sections 27-34, pasture name CN, southeast fence) for ½ mile (2,640 feet) 3) Fence 3: (sections 27-34, pasture name CN, south fence) for 1 mile (5,280 feet), and 4) Fence 4: (sections 27-34, pasture name CN, west fence) for 1 ½ miles (7,920 feet). All materials (posts, wire, steel pipe brace posts – see below for specs), except staples, will be provided by the USDA-ARS. Installation will be provided by the contractor. Removal of existing fence shall be done by the USDA-ARS. The contractor is expected to install six (6) 3-post H braces, fifteen (15) 2 post-H-braces (terminal), and nine (9) single in-line corner posts, and approximately nine deadman. For terminal 2 post H-braces (15 of these), both the primary and secondary corner posts in each of these braces will be 7 inch diameter posts with length of 10 feet (120 inches). These posts need to be installed to a minimum of 60 inches, thereby leaving approximately 60 inches aboveground. H brace posts will be connected by a steel pipe (minimum 1.5 inch diameter and a minimum length of 120 inches (or 10 feet)). A diagonal wire (using #9 wire) will be wrapped around both posts, with it tied to the bottom of the corner on the H brace using an earth anchor and at top of the other post (see pictures at end of attached file). Single in-line corner posts (9 of these) will also be a 7 inch minimum diameter post with length of 10 feet (120 inches). These posts need to be installed to a minimum of 60 inches, thereby leaving approximately 60 inches aboveground. Line posts will be wood (minimum 4 inch diameter at top, pointed/capped/round and doweled, with a length of 7 feet (or 84 inches). Line posts will be installed every rod (16 feet), and to a minimum depth of 28 inches, thereby leaving approximately 56 inches above ground. Cannot be hammered in – all holes for posts must be augered or dug. Four strands of fence wire will be as follows, top 3 strands barbed wire (12 ½ gauge, Class I, 2pt, 4 inch spacing) and the 4th (bottom) strand being smooth (barbless) wire (12 ½ gauge, Class I). Each roll of barbed/barbless wire is approximately 1,320 feet (1/4 mile) in length. The smooth wire will be attached to wood line posts by barbed, galvanized staples (minimum length of 1.75 inches) at a minimum height of 16 inches from the ground. The 3 top strands of barbed wire will also be attached to wood line posts by barbed, galvanized staples (minimum length of 1.75 inches) at heights of approximately 28, 40 and 52 inches from the ground. All sixteen foot tubular steel gates will be provided by the USDA-ARS and installed by USDA- ARS personnel. See attached photos for more clarification.
