The Livestock Arthropod Pest Research Unit (LAPRU) includes the Cattle Fever Tick Research Laboratory (CFTRL), a satellite facility operating under biosecurity at the USDA Moore Air Base near Edinburg, Texas. This lab supports the USDA Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program by developing technologies to keep the U.S. free of cattle fever ticks. Unique assets include tick colonies, barns for studies with artificially infested cattle, and pastures for field-like research conditions. However, modernization is needed because the current perimeter fence around pasture 7 is allowing wildlife onto the facility, risking the loss of quarantine zones. The work is performed at the Edinburg, Texas facility.
