The Pinehurst tree cooler was installed in 1985 and serves to maintain the cold storage of tree seedlings to be planted in restoration projects on the district. Proper temperature control is paramount for the health and survival of seedlings, and a deciding factor in the success of reforestation projects. The refrigeration system that cools the tree cooler is out-of-date and utilizes R22 refrigerant – this R22 formulation is no longer in production and there is a finite supply remaining that is subject to increasing costs and is no longer approved for use in California. This has created a need to retrofit the tree cooler with a new refrigeration system that utilizes a currently produced and state approved refrigerant. The cooler has temperature gauges and a temperature alarm to ensure the protection of these valuable resources, both of which are currently inoperable. The location of these services is Sequoia NF– FY23 Pinehurst Tree Cooler Retrofit for Hume Lake Ranger District Restoration Projects.
