The USDA, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Wildlife Services (WS) intends to procure Aviation Flight Helmets to replace aging/damaged flight helmets. A recent survey of Western Region states determined that several pilots and gunners either have a helmet that needs immediate replacement or will need to be replaced in the next three years based on the helmet’s current condition. In the last two aviation accidents, three of the four crewmembers’ helmets came off their head during the crash sequence. As a result, an increased awareness to include training on proper helmet inspection and wear has been incorporated into all ATOC training. This has led to a surge in identifying helmets that are not serviceable or have limited life remaining before needing to be replaced.
