This project will entail the removal of all trees from two plantations totaling +/-17 acres on the southern unit of the Massabesic Experimental Forest in Alfred Maine. The project will also include the removal of an old cattle fence measuring approximately 3000ft. The two plantations were planted in the early 1960’s to evaluate the effectiveness of various tree species and their effectiveness to combat pine weevil. Project was eventually abandoned, and the plantations are now overgrown and are in poor health. Many of the trees are dead or dying. Due to the proximity of the plantations to a town road the site poses a wildland fire threat due to high accumulation of downed woody material. Plans for the sites will be to convert them to permanent wildlife openings which will be treated mechanically and with prescribed fire. It will be the responsibility of the contractor to remove all trees in the designated plantations. How the trees are removed and processed is at the discretion of the contractor. All trees and woody biomass need to be removed from the site. Both plantations are delineated with orange two striping on trees. All tree within the two striping needs to be removed All equipment must be cleaned and inspected by the COR or their agent prior to being used on the project. Equipment needs to clear of all vegetation and organic matter. This will prevent the spread of invasive species The contractor shall be responsible for contacting the town of Alfred regarding any road permits and are responsible for any damages caused due to trucking. The fence and associated fencing material shall be removed from north plantation. This will include all metal fencing, wooden posts. All materials once dismantled will need to be properly disposed of at the contractor expense. For additional information, please reference the provided attachments.
