This contract is for the planning, development, and installation of an interpretive exhibit for the Galena Creek Visitor Center, on the Carson Ranger District on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Washoe County, NV. The purposes of the interpretive services are to enhance public understanding of Native American occupation and utilization of Truckee Meadows. The Visitor Center currently has no interpretive services related to Native Americans living in Truckee Meadows; past or present. There are several displays inside the Visitor Center that describe historical events. There is an interpretative walking loop at the Visitor Center, but it does not include prehistory (e.g., ethnobotany, language, peoples, subsistence resources, technology, etc.). Truckee Meadows was utilized by ethnographic Washoe and Northern Paiute. There are unlimited sources of preliminary background research related to occupation and utilization of Truckee Meadows; however, that information needs to be distilled into culturally sensitive and understandable presentations at the Galena Creek Visitor Center. The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony and the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California have interests in assisting with content development and the Forest Service encourages their participation. The Forest Service has already invited them to participate. The desired content and accuracy of the content will need to be navigated between all parties. The Forest Service will ultimately make the decision in the event of conflicting information. Additionally, the Visitor Center is managed by the Great Basin Institute. They will be another partner in the planning process. For additional background information please see the Visitor Center website: https://www.galenacreekvisitorcenter.org/ At this time, the preliminary desired location of an interpretive exhibit is outside the Visitor Center adjacent to the building because we believe it would receive the highest visitation. Estimates should include the equivalent of three to four panels (tri-panel kiosk or individual sings panels). However, we are open to other ideas.
