A portable, highly sensitive laser vibrometer is needed to meet the special needs of field out field research. It is essential not to disturb the traps or surrounding environment with traditional mechanical sensor probes. Laser technology allows for measurements to be taken remotely with disturbing the insect traps. This unit can take measurements from a safe distance up to 30m., has up to 3 hours of battery time, and has frequency range up to 320kHz and velocities up to 6 m/s. This degree of sensitivity is needed to detect minute insects and larvae within a tree, fruit, or trap. The non-contact vibration sensor system is necessary so insects are not deterred from entering traps for automatic counting systems.
