Google will no longer support the Angular JS 1.8.x version of the open-source front-end web application framework so that they may focus their support on Angular JS 2.X– this creates a significant security risk for STARS - a high-value asset. One company, XLTS.DEV, is providing extended support (including maintenace/patching) on a per user basis (STARS has 12 developers). Extended support allows us to keep the current framework version, forgoing a full code re-write (more than a million LOCs). Because our development vendor’s technical team did not advise us that this product was going out of support in time to do more robust planning, we must fulfill this critical need with extended support. Many vendors offer migration to Angular JS 2.0 or a similar technology; however the lead time to re-write over 1 million lines of code will not permit our getting this done this year. Project Manager estimates that the re-write of code will be about 1700 story points, which is approximately $6 million effort leading to the obvious choice of spending the ~$61,000 to pay for the extended support. STARS will undergo modernization in the next few years so value in a $6 million effort would not be realized and be wasteful spending.
