The Hiawatha National Forest is seeking a request for proposals for the installation of alternative power (i.e. solar) at two locations on Grand Island National Recreation Area located a 1/2 mile of the city of Munising, Michigan. Below is a summary of the purpose of the proposed project: 1. The Hiawatha National Forest is planning to construct a new system(s) of providing electrical power to replace (2) grid-power electric services located at (2) main building sites on the island (Williams Landing Visitor Center and FS Employee Work Center). See the attached location map and service site details. 2. The HNF is primarily interested in Alternative Energy systems, such as solar, wind, or other, which do not burn fossil fuels and are not tied to the commercial power grid. The new electrical power system will not rely on an underwater cable connecting the island’s power grid to the main electrical grid. The proposed new energy system is to include emergency backup and building heating components which may burn fossil fuels. 3. The proposed solution may include a single large system, or a separate system for each existing electrical service.
