The U.S. President's Malaria Initiative (PMI)—led by the USAID and implemented together with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)—delivers cost-effective, lifesaving malaria interventions alongside catalytic technical and operational assistance to support Ghana to end malaria, the leading cause of death in the country. The PMI recently approved Ghana’s $26 million FY 2021 Malaria Operational Plan to fund a combination of bilateral and centrally managed programs that promote four major malaria control interventions, as follows: (1) indoor residual spraying (IRS) in targeted districts; (2) regular and correct use of insecticide treated bed nets (ITNs); (3) effective malaria treatment using artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACTs) and improved diagnostics; and (4) provision of intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp). The PMI program is also the largest area of investment of the Health, Population, and Nutrition Office’s (HPNO’s) $73 million portfolio. PMI’s support advances the Government of Ghana (GOG) National Malaria Control Strategic Plan 2014-2020, which aims to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality by 75 percent, from the 2012 baseline, across all the regions of the country. By 2020, Ghana surpassed its malaria mortality goal with an 85 percent reduction from 2012 (2,275 deaths) to 2018 (417 deaths). Ghana also achieved the highest rate of intermittent preventive treatment for pregnant women (IPTp2) in sub-Saharan Africa (78 percent), and made improvements in the rate of at least 3 doses (60 percent). Steady progress by the GOG in malaria prevention and control including strategic information is permitting greater precision in addressing malaria risk at district and sub-district level based on epidemiological and entomological data. In Ghana, PMI works in collaboration with various other international and Ghanaian partners including the Government of Ghana, Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the World Health Organization, and local NGOs and private companies.
