The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is at the forefront of the U.S. government (USG) response in the fight against HIV and AIDS. USAID is a key partner in the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and works closely with other USG agencies on this initiative in more than 90 countries. South Africa has one of the largest PEPFAR portfolios in the world and is primarily implemented through USAID, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the State Department, and Peace Corps. USAID/Southern Africa is one of the Agency's largest missions and the Health Office (HO), the Mission’s largest technical office is responsible for implementation of the bilateral PEPFAR portfolio and a bilateral Tuberculosis (TB) portfolio. The HO oversees a comprehensive portfolio of HIV prevention, care, and treatment, health systems strengthening, strategic information, orphans and vulnerable children activities.
