Pakistan endured the worst flooding episode in the country’s history in the summer of 2022. Damages and losses are estimated at over $30 billion. Most of the flood-affected areas are in the province of Sindh, predominantly a rural region. The floods caused significant damage to the power distribution infrastructure of the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) and the Sukkur Electric Supply Company (SEPCO) serving most of the province of Sindh. USAID partnered with the Government of Pakistan (GOP) in the relief efforts. Post relief phase, USAID is also looking into ways to support the rehabilitation of the flood affected areas and people. PSIA is well positioned to support the power system rehabilitation and rebuilding in HESCO. PSIA aims to increase the financial viability, reliability, and affordability of the power system in Pakistan. It focuses on engaging the private sector as well as Pakistani and regional stakeholders and will channel resources through three objectives: 1) Increase power-sector competition through support to develop Pakistan's wholesale electricity market; 2) Improve the management and operation of transmission and distribution system; 3) Optimize grid electricity load.
