The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)’s Protein Chemistry Section (PCS) of the Research Technologies Branch (RTB) requires the purchase of a new Octet® R8 system for biomolecular binding kinetic assays. The Octet® R8 system will be used to perform interaction analysis with a label-free bio-layer interferometry approach to biomolecular detection of protein-protein interactions, specifically affinity, specificity and real-time kinetics of binding. The need for high-speed, non-destructive binding kinetic characterization has been established by a number of Division of Intramural Research (DIR) laboratories, but there was no cross-institute availability of the instrumentation. This resulted in several laboratories independently purchasing equipment that could be better utilized by multiple laboratories as a part of the RTB. The dip-and-read mode of operation of the Octet® R8 system with its individual biosensors makes this a good fit as a reliable, easy-to-use, high-throughput instrument that can be operated without fear of cross-contamination.
